Release film, also called separator film or protective film, is a thin film with a surface that prevents sticking. In most cases, it’s used to increase the release force of plastic films.

Common die-cutting issues with release films and their causes:

  1. Tape sticks back and makes a “pop” sound when peeled off.
Cause: This usually happens when the release force of the film is too high, or when the adhesive coating is uneven.
  2. Material that’s supposed to separate doesn’t come off.
Cause: This is mainly due to poor matching of the PET release film’s release force. It could be because the film didn’t pass quality checks, the inspection equipment wasn’t accurate, or the production process wasn’t stable — all of which can make the release force uneven and inconsistent.
  3. After die-cutting and storing for a while, the tape won’t separate from the release film.
Cause: Usually, this is due to uneven adhesive coating. Some areas may have weaker release force, which makes it hard to peel the tape later.
  4. Static builds up during unwinding/rewinding, causing dust to stick.
Cause: This happens when production isn’t done in a cleanroom. To fix the dust problem, either set up production in a cleanroom or use anti-static PET release film.
